Gray Wolf Conservation Crisis: Center for Biological Diversity Sues Fish and Wildlife Service (2025)

The fate of the gray wolf hangs in the balance, and a legal battle is brewing. The Center for Biological Diversity is gearing up to sue the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) over the lack of a comprehensive national recovery plan for these majestic creatures.

This isn't just a new issue; it's a continuation of a fight. Two years ago, the Center won a similar lawsuit, forcing the FWS to re-evaluate wolf recovery needs. Now, they're back, challenging the Trump administration's decision that ongoing protection under the Endangered Species Act is 'no longer appropriate.' This determination, the Center argues, is a justification for not updating the recovery plan.

Collette Adkins, a senior attorney and carnivore conservation director at the Center, minced no words, stating that the administration has again failed in its legal obligations. She emphasized the need for a modern, all-encompassing plan to guide the gray wolf's recovery across the nation.

But here's where it gets controversial... The existing federal plan, dating back to 1992, primarily focuses on Minnesota. It largely overlooks regions like the West Coast and the southern Rocky Mountains, where wolf populations are struggling. The Center highlights the previous Trump administration's actions, which led to the removal of federal protections, allowing states to authorize hunting and trapping seasons. This resulted in the deaths of hundreds of wolves before protections were reinstated by a federal court.

Adkins pointed out, "We know that Trump’s plan to strip gray wolves of lifesaving protections will be a disaster because we’ve seen it before."

The Center plans to file its formal lawsuit in early February, following a required 60-day notice of intent to sue.

What do you think? Do you believe a comprehensive national recovery plan is essential for the gray wolf's survival? Should the focus be on specific regions, or should it be a nationwide effort? Share your thoughts in the comments below – let's get a conversation started!
