Farming is a huge component of the cozy MMORPG, Palia, which recently released for Open Beta. However, farming in Palia is much different than you might be used to. This is chiefly due to all crops in Palia have a unique attribute called an "effect bonus".

Crops in Palia with an effect bonus will grant a bonus to any nearby crop, such as keeping nearby crops hydrated or clear of weeds. As you could imagine, this makes planning the layout for your garden absolutely crucial. If you are really smart about it, you can even engineer a nearly self-sustaining farm!

The type of farm layout that is best for you will change gradually as you progress through Palia. Soil Plots can be pricey, and a couple of the best-selling crops cannot be unlocked until you have nearly maxed out your Gardening Skill. That's why on this page of IGN's Palia guide, we've broken down some of the best farm layouts for Palia beginners, as well as some garden layouts that are more intermediate and expert-level.

  • Best 3x3 Farm Plot Layout
  • Best 6x6 Farm Plot Layout
  • Best 9x9 Farm Plot Layout

Best 3x3 Farm Plot Layout

Seeds Needed:

  • 2x Onion
  • 2x Carrot
  • 2x Potato
  • 2x Tomato
  • 1x Wheat

When you first start out in Palia, you'll be given a single Soil Plot to start off with. Each soil plot can fit a total of nine crops in a 3x3 layout. While this might narrow down the amount of crops you can plant at once significantly, you can really maximize your profits with a single plot by using this beginner-friendly layout!

By staggering your crops in the pattern shown in the table above, you ensure that all your crops will stay watered (since each crop is placed adjacent to either a Potato or a Tomato), free of weeds (since each crop is placed adjacent to either a Carrot or Onion), and your Tomatos and Carrots get the added bonus from the Wheat, increasing the yield harvested.

You can also easily replace the Wheat in the center tile of this 3x3 layout with either a Rice Seed or a Cotton Seed, depending on what you need. Planting a Cotton Seed at the center instead will increase the quality of your Tomatoes and Carrots!

Best 6x6 Farm Plot Layout

Seeds Needed:

  • 5x Wheat
  • 6x Rice
  • 6x Potato
  • 6x Tomato
  • 7x Onion
  • 5x Carrot

This is the best farm layout if you have been playing Palia for quite a bit now, but still have not unlocked Blueberries or Apples by reaching Gardening Level 10. At this stage in the game, you want to prioritize making profits with putting as little effort into your garden as possible.

The layout shown in the table above prioritizes retaining water and keeping your crops weed-free, so that you focus more on questing and romancing without returning to your House Plot every day-cycle to tend to your farm.

You might notice that this 6x6 layout does not feature any Cotton Seeds. In general, the "boosts amount harvested from nearby crops" bonus tends to be the better money-maker than the "boost quality of nearby crops" effect that Cotton provides. It's typically better to sell two of a single crop than a single star-quality crop. However, if you're in desperate need of Cotton to make Fabric for crafting recipes, any of the Wheat or Rice tiles in this layout can easily be swapped out for Cotton Seeds.

Best 9x9 Farm Plot Layout

Seeds Needed:

  • 2x Blueberry Bush
  • 1x Apple Tree
  • 4x Wheat
  • 4x Rice
  • 15x Carrot
  • 10x Onion
  • 19x Tomato
  • 12x Potato

Once you reach Gardening Level 10, a whole new world will open up to you... Blueberry Bushes and Apple Trees! After reaching this Gardening milestone, you can start unlocking Gardening Skill Medals. Skill Medals are a currency that can only be spend at their corresponding Guild Store. So, any Skill Medals you earn while Gardening can be exchanged for certain goods at Barduu's Gardening Store.

With Blueberry and Apple Seeds available for purchase from Barduu, it's time to rearrange your whole plot. The 9x9 layout shown in the table above offers you one hundred percent water retention, is practically weed-free, and boosts the quantity of Blueberries you can harvest with each cycle.

Apples and Blueberries are a game-changer for farming and making money in Palia. Both of these crops have an effect bonus which increases nearby crop's grow speed. Each Blueberry Bush can be harvested four times before it needs to be replanted, gives a minimum of six Blueberries each harvest, and sells for 39 Gold each. Meanwhile, Apple Trees can also be harvested four times in a row, gives at least sixteen Apples with each harvest, and sells for 64 Gold each.
