A shocking revelation has emerged from the Anambra gubernatorial election, leaving many in disbelief. Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo's re-election has sparked a firestorm of reactions, with some celebrating and others crying foul play.
The Labour Party's George Moghalu and his ADC counterpart, John Nwosu, have boldly rejected the election results, citing widespread irregularities and vote-buying. INEC's announcement of Soludo's victory with 422,664 votes has only fueled the controversy.
But here's where it gets controversial: Moghalu, in a scathing statement, accused the election process of being riddled with irregularities, including the alarming practice of vote-buying. He claimed that even children, who shouldn't have possessed voter cards, were allowed to vote openly.
Similarly, Nwosu of the ADC alleged massive vote-buying across polling units, with voters reportedly induced with cash ranging from N3,000 to N20,000. He emphasized that an election's credibility hinges on its fairness and reflection of the people's genuine will.
Despite these allegations, many observers noted an overall improvement in logistics, technology, and voter management compared to previous elections. However, the controversy surrounding the election's integrity remains a hot topic.
INEC declared Soludo the winner with a total of 422,664 votes, surpassing the APC's 99,445 and the Labour Party's 10,576. The Returning Officer, Prof. Edoba Bright Omoregie, certified the election as largely credible, stating that incidents in certain areas affected only 10,481 votes, which fell within the margin of error.
Political analysts attribute Soludo's landslide victory to various factors, including the zoning arrangement, APGA's grassroots support, the governor's performance, and a weakened opposition. Despite these improvements, some voters, particularly women, were disenfranchised. A 96-year-old woman was barred from voting due to a lack of a PVC, and several market women missed out due to difficulties collecting their PVCs and prioritizing market day.
Observers and analysts generally gave a positive assessment of the election, praising the peaceful atmosphere and improved professionalism among security personnel. However, they condemned the late deployment of materials, low voter turnout, and rampant vote-buying.
The Centre for Transparency Advocacy (CTA) raised concerns about the welfare and logistics for election officials, reporting stranded police officers and poorly monitored vehicles. The CDD-West Africa linked electoral shortcomings to governance failures and weak institutions, recommending reforms to allow normal economic activities during elections.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) strongly criticized the election, describing it as a cash-driven spectacle. In a statement, the party accused Governor Soludo and APGA of engaging in open cash-for-votes practices.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, however, commended INEC for conducting a credible election, praising Soludo's governance style and urging the commission to maintain high standards. He emphasized that Soludo's victory showcases the importance of performance and hard work in a democracy.
